Ancient world maps make an excellent addition to any home décor. Whether you have a large map hung in a wood frame, or a smaller one on your desk, these bits of history can make you seem both sophisticated and intelligent. In a way, these maps actually can make you more intelligent as you study the history they portray.

Since these maps have made such a comeback as a decoration, retailers have run with the map idea and have begun printing these maps on all sorts of home décor items. For instance, you can purchase a footstool imprinted with a world map. These maps are also found on calendars, wall hangings, watches, clocks, wall paper, blankets and even neck ties.

Some people buy rare ancient world maps while some are happy with just a copy. In fact, those who consider themselves full-time collectors are willing to spend hundreds of dollars to buy just one map dating back hundreds of years.

If you are interested in owning an ancient world map, there are numerous auction houses as well as internet auction sites that will be happy to set you up with a map. Beware though, these maps are not cheap. On a recent online auction, a map dating back to 1640 sold for $11,000. This particular map was in German text and depicted the Seven Wonders of the World, the Pyramids, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the lighthouse of Alexandria, the five known planets of that time period, and the sun and moon.

Since most of us don’t have that much cash on hand to invest in such a treasure, you might be glad to know you can also find replicas of ancient world maps which are much more affordable. Don’t look at a world class auction house to find one of these replicas; your best bet would probably be a local antique shop. They will likely have a map replica which would be perfect for your home or office.

Another option when searching for an ancient world map is the internet. It is often one of the best places to look for hard to find items. Before ordering though, be sure the company is reputable and the shipping costs reasonable.
